PURPLE HAWK COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Cambridge, MN, USA
Designed by Don Herfort

Purple Hawk Country Club sits in Cambridge, Minnesota, a community roughly fifty miles north of the Twin Cities in the Isanti County lake country. The course was designed by Don Herfort, a Minnesota-based architect who has worked extensively throughout the Upper Midwest since the 1990s. Herfort's designs typically emphasize playability for a range of skill levels while incorporating the natural terrain features common to the region.
The Cambridge area is characterized by gently rolling glacial topography, scattered wetlands, and stands of hardwood and pine. Purple Hawk's routing likely takes advantage of these natural elevation changes and wooded corridors, creating definition and variety across the eighteen holes. Herfort's approach generally favors strategic options off the tee and around the greens rather than penal hazards, allowing members and guests to choose risk-reward lines suited to their games.
As a country club in a smaller Minnesota community, Purple Hawk serves as a social and recreational hub for the area. The club provides a traditional member experience with dining facilities and event hosting alongside its golf amenities. Courses in this setting typically balance championship-length challenges for competitive players with forward tees and open sightlines that keep pace of play reasonable for all members. The layout supports regular club competitions and regional amateur events while remaining accessible for everyday recreational rounds.
Reviews
Love this place. Campground nearby so it’s a perfect spot for a quick getaway camp-golf-camp-golf weekend. Course can be a little soft but lots of fun shots.
Home course so I may be biased, but I think the land here is incredibly underrated. The front nine is very well laid out with a lot of variety, and the back is more of an execution and recovery test between trees and rolling hills. 18 is a great finisher. One of my favorite places in the world
