PUNTA BORINQUEN GOLF COURSE
🇵🇷 Ramey Base, Puerto Rico, PR
Designed by Ferdinand Garbin
Punta Borinquen Golf Course sits on the former Ramey Air Force Base in the northwest corner of Puerto Rico, occupking dramatic coastal terrain along the Atlantic Ocean. Ferdinand Garbin designed the course, which opened in the 1950s to serve military personnel stationed at what was then a Strategic Air Command base. The layout takes advantage of the site's natural limestone cliffs and ocean views, with several holes playing directly along the coastline where trade winds add a significant challenge to club selection and shot execution.
The course occupies rolling terrain that transitions from inland holes through more exposed coastal stretches. The limestone bedrock that characterizes this region of Puerto Rico influences both the playing surfaces and the dramatic drop-offs near the water. Several holes feature elevated tees with views across the Caribbean, while others play through corridors of tropical vegetation that provide contrast to the windswept coastal sections.
After Ramey Air Force Base closed in the 1970s, the property transitioned through various phases of civilian use. The golf course has remained operational as a public facility, though it has experienced periods of varying maintenance levels and infrastructure challenges common to former military installations. The routing preserves much of Garbin's original design intent, offering golfers in northwest Puerto Rico access to oceanfront holes and the distinctive character of links-style conditions in a tropical setting. The course serves both local residents and visitors exploring the Aguadilla area.
