Prince Bishops' at Ramside Hall Hotel Golf Club

The Prince Bishops' course at Ramside Hall Hotel Golf Club opened in 1996, designed by Jonathan Gaunt on rolling farmland in County Durham, approximately three miles east of Durham city. The course takes its name from the historic Prince Bishops of Durham, powerful ecclesiastical figures who governed the region for centuries. The layout occupies elevated terrain that provides views across the Durham countryside, with the course routed over natural undulations that characterize this part of northeast England.

Gaunt's design incorporates the existing topography into a parkland layout that features mature tree-lined fairways, strategically placed water hazards, and well-defended greens. The course measures over 6,600 yards from the championship tees and presents a variety of hole styles, with several doglegs that require careful positioning and approach shots to greens that vary in size and contour. Water comes into play on multiple holes, most notably on the back nine where ponds and streams influence club selection and strategy.

As part of a hotel and leisure complex, the Prince Bishops' serves both resort guests and members, hosting regional amateur competitions and corporate events throughout the year. The course is complemented by the Cathedral course, a shorter nine-hole layout also on the property. Ramside Hall's facilities include extensive practice areas and dining options that cater to the golf operation, making it a significant golfing destination in the northeast of England where championship-length courses are relatively scarce.
