VILA SOL SPA & GOLF RESORT
🇵🇹 Vilamoura, Algarve, PT
Designed by Donald Steel
Vila Sol Spa & Golf Resort's Prime and Challenge nines form part of a 27-hole complex designed by Donald Steel and opened in the early 1990s in the Vilamoura area of Portugal's Algarve coast. Steel, known for his strategic design philosophy and work across Europe, created three distinct nine-hole loops here that can be combined in different configurations. The Prime and Challenge combination represents one of the more demanding pairings available to members and visitors.
The course occupies gently rolling terrain characteristic of the inland Algarve, with umbrella pines, cork oaks, and citrus groves framing many holes. Steel's routing takes advantage of the natural elevation changes to create visual interest and strategic variety, with doglegs that reward well-positioned drives and approach shots that demand accuracy to elevated or contoured greens. Water features come into play on several holes, and the bunkering reflects Steel's preference for hazards that define playing corridors and frame targets rather than simply penalize.
The layout serves as the resort's primary championship test and has hosted regional amateur competitions and professional qualifiers over the years. Vila Sol operates as a resort facility with an international membership base and attracts a steady flow of golf tourists drawn to the Algarve's concentration of courses and year-round playing conditions. The clubhouse offers dining and practice facilities typical of Algarve resort properties, supporting both visiting golfers and residential members from the surrounding development.
