Praia at Onyria Palmares Golf Resort

The Praia course at Onyria Palmares Golf Resort occupies dramatic clifftop terrain along the Atlantic coast near Lagos in Portugal's western Algarve. Robert Trent Jones, Jr. designed the layout to take full advantage of the property's natural elevation changes and ocean exposure, routing holes across rolling dunes and elevated plateaus that provide sweeping views of the coastline and Monchique mountains inland. The course opened in 1975 as Palmares Golf and underwent renovations before being integrated into the Onyria resort portfolio.

The routing divides between holes that play along the clifftops with direct ocean views and those that move through more sheltered inland terrain characterized by umbrella pines and native vegetation. Several holes feature significant elevation changes, with tee shots played from elevated positions down toward fairways that tumble toward the sea or climb back uphill to greens set against the sky. The design incorporates natural waste areas and strategic bunkering typical of Jones's work, asking players to manage both the coastal wind and the property's topographical movement.

The course sits within walking distance of Meia Praia, one of the Algarve's longest beaches, and the historic center of Lagos. The resort setting includes accommodations and dining facilities that serve both resort guests and members, with the golf experience emphasizing the contrast between exposed coastal holes and the more protected inland stretches. The Praia course represents one of the earlier championship layouts developed along this section of the Algarve coast.
