PORTO SANTO GOLF
🇵🇹 Porto Santo, Madeira, PT
Designed by Severiano Ballesteros
Porto Santo Golf occupies the northern coast of Porto Santo, a small island in the Madeira archipelago roughly 40 kilometers northeast of Madeira itself. Designed by Severiano Ballesteros and opened in 2004, the course represents one of the Spanish champion's later design projects and his only work in the Portuguese islands. The layout takes advantage of the island's distinctive topography, incorporating volcanic rock formations, sandy terrain, and native vegetation across an 18-hole routing that moves through varied elevations and coastal exposures.
The course plays across relatively open ground with ocean views from multiple holes, particularly on the front nine where several holes run closer to the shoreline. Ballesteros incorporated the natural contours and existing landscape features into the design, creating holes that require strategic positioning and careful club selection in the wind conditions common to this exposed Atlantic setting. The sandy soil provides firm playing surfaces, and the routing includes a mix of elevation changes that add dimension to what might otherwise be flatter coastal terrain.
Porto Santo itself remains a quieter destination than Madeira, known primarily for its long beach and more relaxed pace. The golf course serves both resort visitors and traveling golfers seeking an island experience distinct from the more developed courses on the European mainland. The facility includes practice areas and a clubhouse that accommodates the modest but steady flow of play the island attracts, particularly during the warmer months when conditions favor golf and beach activities alike.
