GENEVA NATIONAL RESORT
🇺🇸 Lake Geneva, WI, USA
Designed by Gary Player

Player, at Geneva National, is where brute strength meets meticulous strategy on a sprawling Wisconsin landscape. This Arnold Palmer design, carved from the rolling countryside outside Lake Geneva, evokes a modern parkland aesthetic, rewarding bold play while punishing the wayward. Wide fairways invite aggression off the tee, but the course quickly tightens, demanding deft shot-making and shrewd club selection on the approach.
Palmer's signature is evident in the dramatic bunkering and tiered greens, requiring precise distance control to navigate the subtle breaks. Geneva National's Player Course does not lean into any one specific playing style, but favors those who can adapt their game to the challenge, rewarding both power and finesse in equal measure.
While Player has not hosted major professional championships, its demanding layout and immaculate conditioning have long made it a favorite among competitive amateurs and seasoned resort guests alike. The club itself is known for its tight-knit membership, drawn from the surrounding estates and the vibrant Lake Geneva community, who gather year round and is a staple among those looking to spend time on the lake.
Reviews
The Gary Player Course at Destination Geneva National was my second favorite on the property, and it delivered another awesome experience. Everything about the overall setup — from the cottages to the clubhouse, range, and that giant putting green by the Cantina bar — is just as good as it gets for a golf trip. The course itself was in great shape, especially for early in the season. The greens were a real highlight — smooth, quick, and super fun to putt on with plenty of movement but nothing unfair. The layout offers a nice mix of challenge and playability. Some of the opening holes are definitely on the tighter side, but they’re still fair and reward good ball striking. What I really enjoyed about the Gary Player course is how much risk-reward it presents. There are a handful of holes where you can take on aggressive lines off the tee or go for it in two on the par 5s, and it makes for a really engaging round. Overall, it’s another course I’d highly recommend at Geneva National. Between the conditioning, layout, and the full resort experience, it’s a blast to play and rounds out the property perfectly.
The Player course is pure and the layout is a lot of fun - every shot will keep you guessing, with some holes along the lake. Conditions are immaculate, country club quality for sure. Only gripe is that it’s not the best deal - for a $200 round, they should be able to have a few water coolers on the course in the middle of summer
