PIPING ROCK CLUB
🇺🇸 Locust Valley, NY, USA
Designed by Charles Macdonald
Piping Rock, sculpted into the fabric of Locust Valley's storied Gold Coast, whispers tales of early twentieth-century ambition and social tapestry woven as intricately as its fairways. This is a club rooted in privilege and, from its earliest days, a celebration of sporting life, beyond just championship golf.
Designed by the masterful Charles Blair Macdonald, with later refinements by Seth Raynor, Piping Rock unfolds across rolling, parkland terrain. The classic layout presents generous landing areas, but rewards strategic approaches to subtly contoured greens. While length isn't the course's primary defense, thoughtful bunkering and well-placed hazards encourage careful club selection and a measured approach, making it a test of cerebral golf rather than pure power.
Piping Rock hosted the 1924 U.S. Amateur Championship, a testament to its early prominence in the national golf landscape. Today, while not often in the major championship spotlight, the club remains a fixture of the region’s competitive amateur scene, attracting a discerning membership known for its deep roots in the area and a deep-seated love for the traditions of the game.
Beyond the links, Piping Rock is as known for its social calendar as it is for its immaculate greens. Lobster Night remains a beloved tradition, emblematic of the club’s understated elegance and commitment to fostering a sense of community amongst its members.
Reviews
Fairway bunker placement could not be more perfectly (or horribly because I was in then on what felt like half my tee shots). Greens are amazing and roll as true as any I have played.
A true old money club on the Gold Coast of Long Island. Second CB McDonald ever design after NGLA. Perfect turf conditions, playable course. All the templates and just an amazing experience.
C.B. McDonald has to work around the polo field which has become the largest driving range I’ve ever seen. So many classic green complexes and a wonderful design. You feel like you’re in your own separate world when playing out there. A fantastic experience.
What a treat it was to caddy here for 4 summers, the cause of my MacRaynor obsession
One of the best from CB MacDonald. Piping Rock plays firm and fast and is an absolute blast to play. The Par 3 3rd Redan is an absolute standout hole. Played Piping Rock after the Creek in the morning which turned out to be the best golfing day I’ve had.
Ball knowers only.
