PINNACLE POINT BEACH AND GOLF RESORT
🇿🇦 Mossel Bay, Western Cape, ZA
Designed by Peter Matkovich
Pinnacle Point occupies dramatic clifftop terrain along the Indian Ocean near Mossel Bay on South Africa's Garden Route. Peter Matkovich designed the course to take full advantage of the property's natural elevation changes and coastal exposure, routing several holes directly along the cliff edges where the land drops sharply to the sea below. The site's topography creates significant variation in playing angles and elevation, with fairways often perched above rocky outcroppings and indigenous fynbos vegetation framing the corridors.
The course is known particularly for its oceanfront stretch, where multiple holes play along or toward the cliffs with the water visible throughout. These holes require carries over natural ravines and strategic positioning to account for coastal winds that can shift club selection considerably. Inland holes move through more sheltered terrain but maintain the property's overall elevation character, with views extending across Mossel Bay and the surrounding coastline.
Pinnacle Point forms part of a resort development that includes residential components and lodge accommodations. The course opened in the mid-2000s and represents one of the more prominent modern clifftop designs in South Africa, drawing visitors to the Garden Route region who seek coastal golf in a setting distinct from the country's inland parkland and links-style courses. The property's archaeological significance—caves on the cliffs contain evidence of early human habitation—adds historical context to the natural drama of the location.
