GRANGE GOLF CLUB
🇮🇪 Rathfarnham, Dublin, IE
Designed by James Braid
The Grange Golf Club sits in Rathfarnham on the southern outskirts of Dublin, occupying parkland terrain at the foot of the Dublin Mountains. The club operates two courses, and the Philip Love course represents the newer of the two layouts. James Braid, the five-time Open Champion who became one of Britain and Ireland's most prolific golf architects in the early twentieth century, designed the original eighteen holes at Grange in the 1920s. The Philip Love course takes its name from a significant figure in the club's history and utilizes land that allows for a distinct routing from the older layout.
The course moves across gently rolling parkland with mature tree-lined fairways typical of Irish inland golf. Braid's design principles—strategic bunkering, natural contours, and holes that reward thoughtful play over pure power—remain evident in the layout. The setting provides views toward the nearby mountains while maintaining the enclosed, traditional feel of established parkland golf. Drainage and playing conditions benefit from the slight elevation and the free-draining soils common to this part of County Dublin.
Grange Golf Club has long served as a competitive venue for Irish amateur golf, hosting regional and national events over the decades. The club maintains a strong membership tradition and operates as a private members' club, though visitors can arrange play. The two-course facility allows the club to accommodate a busy playing schedule while preserving course conditions throughout the year.
