GLENEAGLES GOLF RESORT
🏴 Auchterarder, Perth and Kinross, Scotland
Designed by Jack Nicklaus
The PGA Centenary Course at Gleneagles opened in 1993, designed by Jack Nicklaus to commemorate the centenary of the PGA. Set within the Gleneagles estate in the Perthshire countryside, the course occupies higher ground than the resort's older King's and Queen's courses, offering expansive views across the Ochil Hills and surrounding moorland. Nicklaus routed the layout across rolling terrain with significant elevation changes, incorporating natural burns, heather, and strategic bunkering throughout.
The course gained international prominence when it hosted the 2014 Ryder Cup, marking the first time the matches were held in Scotland since 1973. Several holes were modified in preparation for that event, including adjustments to bunkering and green complexes to meet modern championship standards. The routing features a mix of parkland and heathland characteristics, with the back nine particularly noted for its dramatic elevation shifts and exposed positioning on higher ground.
Nicklaus designed the course with multiple tee boxes to accommodate varying skill levels, though the championship tees stretch the layout to over 7,200 yards. Water comes into play on several holes, most notably on the closing stretch where strategic decisions around risk and reward become prominent. The course operates as part of the Gleneagles resort, which offers hotel accommodations and multiple dining venues alongside its three championship courses. The PGA Centenary remains a fixture on Scotland's tournament rota and attracts visitors seeking a modern championship test in a traditional Scottish setting.
Reviews
Cool course, pretty tough, challenging greens
Played in 2015, not far removed from the Ryder Cup being there, was decent, had some rain, the hotel is amazing though.
