WESTIN MISSION HILLS GOLF RESORT & SPA
🇺🇸 Rancho Mirage, CA, USA
Designed by Pete Dye

The Pete Dye Course at Westin Mission Hills Golf Resort & Spa occupies desert terrain in Rancho Mirage, part of the Coachella Valley's concentration of golf facilities. Pete Dye designed the course in 1987, bringing his characteristic design vocabulary to the Southern California desert landscape. The routing works through natural desert washes and incorporates the stark topography and native vegetation typical of the region, with views toward the Santa Rosa Mountains.
Dye's design features include railroad ties, pot bunkers, and strategic water hazards that define playing corridors and green complexes. The course presents a contrast between manicured playing surfaces and the surrounding desert floor, where native plants and rock formations frame holes. Several holes play along or across desert arroyos, requiring carries over natural waste areas. The greens display the undulation and contouring associated with Dye's work, rewarding precise approach shots and creating challenging recovery situations.
The course serves as one of two championship layouts at the resort property, the other being the Gary Player Signature Course. Mission Hills operates as a resort facility with public access, catering to destination golfers visiting the Palm Springs area. The property includes lodging, spa amenities, and dining facilities typical of desert resort golf venues. The Pete Dye Course represents an example of late-1980s desert golf architecture, when designers were establishing the conventions for routing and aesthetics that would define the region's golf development in subsequent decades.
