PAPAGO GOLF COURSE
🇺🇸 Phoenix, AZ, USA
Designed by Billy Fuller, William Francis Bell
Papago Golf Course, a centerpiece of Phoenix golf, whispers tales of a bygone era, having emerged from the post-war surge in public golf interest. This municipal marvel, carved into the desert landscape near Papago Park's iconic red buttes, presents a decidedly approachable challenge. Wide fairways and subtle elevation changes generally favor those who can keep it in play, though the desert scrub lurking just off the manicured areas will eagerly swallow errant shots.
Designed by William P. Bell in the 1960s, Papago was later touched by the hand of Billy Casper, who modernized some of the green complexes. While not historically known for hosting professional events, Papago’s reputation received a massive boost in 2021 as the home of the inaugural Patriot All-America Invitational, an event showcasing elite collegiate golfers from around the country.
Papago distinguishes itself in the Phoenix golf scene not through prestige, but rather accessibility and community. It provides a welcoming environment for players of all skill levels, and is known for its lively atmosphere and bustling clubhouse. While it may not be on every golfer’s bucket list, Papago undoubtedly holds a special place in the hearts of many Phoenix golfers.
Adding to its allure is the presence of Lou Grubb’s Burgers, a local institution that originated at Papago and has since become synonymous with the course. Nothing quite caps off a round at Papago like sinking your teeth into one of these legendary burgers, a true Phoenix golf tradition.
Reviews
A tough track, but walkable. A rare find in the desert. I would rank this course higher if it were not for the high green fees even for locals.
IMO this course is overrated Overpriced for city course
Fun round, great hang after you get done. Pace play isn’t great.
