GENEVA NATIONAL RESORT
🇺🇸 Lake Geneva, WI, USA
Designed by Arnold Palmer
Palmer at Geneva National isn't merely a golf course; it’s a canvas where Arnold Palmer's bold vision clashes delightfully with the rolling Wisconsin landscape outside Lake Geneva. The course, a product of the early 1990s, unfurls across terrain marked by dramatic elevation changes and strategically placed water hazards. Expect bold carries, risk reward opportunities, and a layout that favors players who can both bomb it and think their way around. It is a course defined more by bravado and big swings than subtle strategy.
While Palmer's design signature is evident, the course hasn't been substantially altered by other architects in recent years, maintaining the integrity of his original intent. The layout has not hosted any major professional championships, it remains a popular destination for amateur events and resort play, known for its playability and scenic beauty.
Beyond the course, Geneva National fosters a relaxed, accessible atmosphere. Unlike some exclusive clubs, Palmer at Geneva National is known for its welcoming environment and absence of stuffiness. This extends to the food, with the resort known for its hearty Midwestern fare rather than pretentious fine dining. It is a place where the focus is on enjoying the game and the company, rather than adhering to strict traditions or formal attire.
Reviews
The Palmer Course at Destination Geneva National was one of the highlights of my bachelor trip — and honestly, one of the best overall golf experiences I’ve had in the Midwest. We went in mid-May with a group of 16 and stayed right on property in the cottages, which was perfect for a big group trip. Being able to walk straight over to the clubhouse each morning made everything super convenient. The clubhouse itself has a great breakfast setup that became our daily routine, and while food and drinks aren’t cheap, it’s exactly what you’d expect for a resort of this caliber. The practice facilities were a big standout for me — a massive range with music going, a dedicated short game area tucked behind it, and this huge Himalayas-style putting green right in the center of the property. That area, paired with the Cantina bar next to it, became the main hangout spot for our group after each round. As for the course — it was in awesome shape for early in the season. The greens were firm and fast, with a lot of their speed coming from the natural undulation in the surfaces. Fairways, bunkers, and tee boxes were all in great condition too. The routing was fun, the views were great, and the pace of play was incredible since the courses on property are spaced out so well. Overall, the Palmer Course (and really the entire Geneva National setup) exceeded all expectations. Between the golf, the stay, and the vibe, it’s an absolute must for any golf trip in the Midwest — and easily one of my surprise highlights of the year.
