OYSTER REEF GOLF COURSE
🇺🇸 Hilton Head Island, SC, USA
Designed by Rees Jones
Oyster Reef Golf Club, sculpted along the tidal marshes of Hilton Head Island, possesses a Lowcountry charm that quietly defies the modern, splashy ambitions of some of its neighbors. Rees Jones, a second generation architect, crafted a layout that balances challenge with coastal beauty, opening in 1982. This Modern era design unfolds across gently rolling terrain, where strategic bunkering and subtly contoured greens place a premium on thoughtful shot making rather than brute power. Oyster Reef presents a fair test for golfers of all skill levels, demanding strategic positioning off the tee and a deft touch around the greens.
While Oyster Reef has never hosted a major professional championship, its enduring appeal lies in its commitment to the traditions of the game and the spirit of camaraderie. The club is locally beloved, known for a unpretentious atmosphere that values genuine connection. It’s a course where the rhythm of the tides seems to influence the pace of play, encouraging a relaxed approach to the game.
One enduring aspect of Oyster Reef is its commitment to the environment. The course actively maintains its ecological integrity, allowing native wildlife to thrive. Alligators sun themselves by the lagoons, herons patrol the fairways, and egrets perch atop the pines. Oyster Reef offers not only a round of golf but an immersion into the natural beauty of the South Carolina coast.
And it may come as no surprise, one local favorite after their round is the classic Lowcountry boil.
Reviews
Oyster reef was a really fun experience, one of our favorites that we played on our golf trip. It features some great featured holes near the river and beautiful landscape. Course conditions were excellent, pro shop staff and everyone was great. We definitely enjoyed the experience and would love to go back!
Typical hilton head golf course. Well maintained really good deal to play but nothing really all that special. Pace of play is incredible though
Oyster Reef is one of those courses that falls into the “fine, but not great” category for me. It’s classic Hilton Head golf — tree-lined fairways, a mix of marsh views, and that Lowcountry feel — but it just doesn’t quite stand out the way some of the others in the area do. I think it used to be considered one of the premier courses on the island, but it’s definitely lost a bit of its shine in recent years. When I played, the conditions were decent, but not anything that really wowed me. The layout is solid, but there aren’t too many holes that stick with you after the round. The one exception is that par 3 with the ocean view — definitely the most memorable hole on the course and a really nice moment in the round. Outside of that, it’s just a fairly average experience overall. Not a bad place to play, but with so many strong options on Hilton Head, it wouldn’t be at the top of my list.
