ORIENTAL SUNSTAR GOLF CLUB
🇹🇼 Baoshan, Hsinchu, TW
Designed by Lee Trevino
Oriental Sunstar Golf Club occupies rolling terrain in Baoshan, in the mountainous Hsinchu region of northwestern Taiwan. Lee Trevino designed the course, one of several international projects the six-time major champion undertook during the 1990s golf development boom in Asia. The layout reflects Trevino's playing philosophy, emphasizing strategic shot placement and course management over pure length, with particular attention to angles and positioning for approach shots.
The property takes advantage of natural elevation changes characteristic of the Hsinchu area, which sits in the foothills between the coast and Taiwan's central mountain range. The routing moves through varied topography, with holes playing across slopes and ridgelines that create both visual interest and strategic demands. The design incorporates water features and bunkering that require players to think carefully about risk and reward, particularly on par fives and drivable par fours where aggressive play must be weighed against potential trouble.
The club serves both local members and visitors in a region known for its technology industry presence, with Hsinchu often called Taiwan's Silicon Valley. The course provides a retreat from the urban centers while remaining accessible to the greater Taipei metropolitan area. Like many Taiwanese courses, Oriental Sunstar maintains conditioning standards that reflect the island's golf culture, where attention to turf quality and presentation remains a priority regardless of a course's competitive profile.
