OLDE STONEWALL GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Elwood City, PA, USA
Designed by Dana Fry, Dr. Michael Hurdzan
Olde Stonewall, nestled in the rolling hills outside Ellwood City, Pennsylvania, presents a bold challenge to golfers willing to test their mettle against its dramatic landscape. Built in the late 1990s, the course carves its way through a landscape that blends manicured fairways with rugged, natural terrain. The layout is a modern design that demands strategic shot-making; its undulating greens and strategically placed bunkers penalize imprecision severely while rewarding audacious play. Favoring those who can shape the ball, Olde Stonewall presents a variety of doglegs and elevation changes, ensuring no two holes play alike.
Designed by Dr. Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry, Olde Stonewall immediately established itself as one of the most visually arresting courses in Western Pennsylvania. The architecture team leveraged the region’s unique topography to create a course defined by its stark contrasts – meticulously sculpted bunkers against the backdrop of untamed woodlands. The design philosophy prioritizes both playability and aesthetics, offering multiple routes to the green while maintaining a distinctly challenging character.
The club, while not hosting major championships, maintains a reputation within the region for its challenging layout and commitment to the traditions of the game. Olde Stonewall is known for its close-knit membership drawn from the surrounding communities.
Reviews
We played Olde Stonewall while visiting Pittsburgh in August 2024 for a Bruce Springsteen concert with my brothers and dad — and of course, we packed the clubs. This course was such a fun surprise. It’s carved through rolling hills with tons of elevation change and character. The first thing you notice is the castle-style clubhouse — easily one of the coolest I’ve seen — with great food and a solid post-round hang. The range and short game area were top-notch, which is always a bonus. The highlight for me was hole 16 — an elevated tee shot that drops down into a fairway guarded by a creek, then back up to a tough green framed by bunkers. It’s one of those holes that just sticks with you. Overall, Olde Stonewall was in great shape, with a fun layout and a mix of challenge and playability that keeps you engaged all day. An awesome track and one I’d definitely recommend if you’re in the Pittsburgh area.
Visited during an extended drought in Western PA. Even still, they did a great job watering & the course was in great shape. Play from the back tees on 16.
