THE GREENBRIER AMERICA'S RESORT
🇺🇸 White Sulphur Springs, WV, USA
Designed by C. B. Macdonald
Old White at The Greenbrier is hallowed ground, where Sam Snead reigned supreme, forever linking the resort to golf's golden age. Carved into the Allegheny Mountains of White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, the course presents a classic parkland experience, its rolling fairways and strategically placed bunkers a testament to a bygone era of strategic, rather than purely power golf. The gently undulating terrain often favors players who can shape their shots, rewarding creativity and finesse over brute strength.
Originally designed by Charles Blair Macdonald in 1914, with later refinements by Seth Raynor, Old White evokes a timeless feel. Its design elements are reminiscent of classic links courses of the British Isles, transplanted to the American landscape. The course demands thoughtful approaches and an appreciation for the subtleties of green reading, though it’s known to be among the easier tests for touring professionals.
As the host of the Greenbrier Classic from 2010 to 2019, Old White showcased some of the game's brightest stars, with champions etching their names into the course's rich history. While not necessarily considered among the nation's most demanding layouts, Old White's legacy is deeply interwoven with the resort's grand tradition of hospitality and sporting excellence.
Beyond the championship pedigree, Old White is known for its refined Southern charm and the enduring spirit of its membership. Evenings on the veranda, accompanied by the resort's legendary mint juleps, provide a perfect complement to a day spent navigating the course's storied fairways, solidifying its position as a cherished landmark in American golf.
Reviews
I grew up going here regularly so I am biased. But The Old White is one of the most beautiful and enjoyable courses I have ever played. The people are great. The conditions are always pristine. And the greens roll pure. Not incredibly difficult (which I like), and the course definitely allows you to score. Go to White Sulphur Springs. Fall in love with the place. Play here and The Meadows Course. Warning: it is expensive and I’m not sure what they think they have here. I think they just try to keep people off of this course to be honest.
The Old White at the Greenbrier is one of the very few courses available to public that was designed by CB MacDonald and Seth Raynor, so if you ever get the opportunity to play, it's a must! The golden age architecture is so different than anything modern with some amazing templates. The Biarritz, Regan, punchbowl, Eden, cape holes are all phenomenal at Old White.
