OLD SANDWICH GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Plymouth, MA, USA
Designed by Ben Crenshaw
Old Sandwich, carved from the rolling, sandy terrain of Plymouth, Massachusetts, whispers of classic heathland courses found across the pond, despite its relatively recent vintage. It is instantly recognizable as a throwback with a focus on purity.
Coore & Crenshaw's 2004 design seamlessly marries the firm's minimalist philosophy with the site’s natural undulations and native fescue grasses. The course stretches long, rewarding length and a deft touch around the greens. Subtle doglegs, strategically placed bunkers, and the ever-present wind ensure a test that favors shotmakers who can move the ball in either direction, with blind shots and uneven lies adding to the challenge.
While Old Sandwich has largely remained outside the professional tournament spotlight, its membership rolls boast some of the game’s most accomplished amateurs and professionals who value its understated elegance and challenging layout. The low profile and high quality makes it an attractive escape from the spotlight for its members who value the privacy and challenge.
Reviews
Special place with a great coore Crenshaw layout. Great variety in all holes. It’s said that the layout was designed by the walk and the holes laid themselves out from there. Coming over the crest on the signature #7 is golfers heaven. Amazing routing, enjoyable walk, and locker room atmosphere is some of the best out there. Range is good and short game area by first tee is good as well. Fun 19th hole than can be played from tees off the front 9 and off #18. Bridge separates the clubhouse and other buildings from the golf course so course is truly set on its own.
So. Much. Fun.

It’s an expensive experience, members for sure, but it’s not cheap for pikers like me to get on here. Par 5 opener, yeah I’ll take some of that, a great mix of par 3’s, & one of them is stupid long but I get it. The clubhouse, locker rooms, practice area, and caddies all create a fun day at an exclusive spot. Oh and 19th hole and the rock, are a unique touch that most places don’t ever think of.
OS’s best feature is a very serene walkway from the clubhouse over a pond over to the first tee. It’s all downhill after that; a few very good holes (1,2,5) but not altogether up to the character and shot quality of other T100 courses. The founders are constantly tweaking the course, obviously they have a model that works for them, but may not align with C&C’s design intent. 18 is a perplexing finishing hole mandating less than driver off the tee (hazard straight away) and then a strenuously long iron approach. Could be others’ cup of tea but didn’t suit mine.
Again, unpopular opinion but this is the best in MA. Pretty cool 19th hole thing they have!
OS is mega pure. Plymouth can be tricky to get too but a great balance of holes. Challenging but fair. Lot of stunning views. Great clubhouse. Set back in the woods there isn’t much a social environment- it’s all golf- but it’s worth the trip.
