BANDON DUNES GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Bandon, OR, USA
Designed by Jim Urbina, Tom Doak
Old MacDonald is where the spirit of classic links golf roams free across the rugged Oregon coast. This tribute to C.B. Macdonald, designed by Tom Doak and Jim Urbina, unfurls across the Bandon, Oregon landscape, a testament to the Golden Age ideals where imagination trumps forced features. The course rewards creative shot-making and strategic thinking, with wide fairways encouraging bold plays, and undulating greens demanding a deft touch. The player who embraces the ground game and accounts for the fierce coastal winds will find the most success.
Rather than manicured perfection, Old Mac celebrates the raw, unyielding nature of linksland. Its bold contours, vast greens, and shared fairways echo the legendary courses of Scotland. It's a course where a misplaced shot can quickly lead to a perplexing conundrum and where even the most seasoned golfer must adapt to the whims of the elements. Old MacDonald isn’t necessarily about low scores but rather about the timeless challenge of golf itself.
While Bandon Dunes is now synonymous with world-class golf, Old MacDonald’s relatively recent addition has solidified the resort’s reputation for embracing both tradition and innovation. Members and visitors alike often swap tales of heroic shots and humbling experiences in the lodge after their rounds, cementing the course’s place in the modern lore of the game. And while the wind might test your patience, the post-round camaraderie and the satisfaction of navigating its unique challenges makes Old MacDonald a staple destination within the Bandon Dunes experience.
Reviews
If you are in to course design/history Old Mac is it, great time and course can be played multiple ways, a real chance to show creativity. Offers massive green complexes, make sure to visit the halfway house once of the best views on the property, also best logo on the property IMO
Huge greens, but difficult. Didn’t feel gimmicky with template holes. The gorse blooming was incredible. Despite one coastline hole was still magnificent. Liked it way more than I thought I would
The Ghost Tree is the first thing you notice. It was our first course of the Bandon trip and the perfect one to get acquainted. Not as many ocean views here but a pure course with a lot to offer from aggressive lines to a fairness to the course which is appreciated. Coore and Crenshaw with another great track.
More Bandon greatness. Old Mac may be the most fun course at BD. Wild greens, blind shots, any bunkering. Play the right tees the par 4’s can be monsters
Maybe a hot take from me but I’d argue Old Mac is top 3 at Bandon. It’s a match play paradise with wide open fairways and a true feeling of links golf. The halfway house might be a top 5 place on earth to have a beer. Don’t sleep on it and if you didn’t like it your first time give it a second chance.
