SUNNINGDALE GOLF CLUB
🏴 Sunningdale, Berkshire, England
Designed by Willie Park
Old at Sunningdale is where Bobby Locke, after a practice round, supposedly bet a member he could break 70 using only his putter and mid-iron. The legend, whether true or embellished, encapsulates the course's enduring appeal: a subtle challenge requiring imagination more than brute force. Set amidst the heather and pine-dusted landscape of Berkshire, Old is Golden Age golf at its most charming, its strategic contours favoring the thoughtful player.
Willie Park Jr.'s original design has been subtly enhanced over the years, most notably by Harry Colt, ensuring the course retains its strategic integrity. While not hosting major professional championships in recent decades, Old’s timeless appeal is a beacon for top amateurs and discerning golfers. Its strategic contours and clever bunkering rewards creativity and deft touch.
Sunningdale is not merely a golf club, but a cherished part of British sporting life. A haven from London, its membership draws from the city's elite, alongside leading figures in golf, business, and the arts. And after the round? The locker room debate over the merits of hickory shafts is as fervent as the putting contest on the 18th green.
Reviews
Elite. Unbelievably manicured course, even with overnight rain that place was pristine, a few wet spots on fairways and traps, but that’s England for you. The clubhouse, the history, the modern practice range and chipping area is everything you’d expect out of top 5 courses in the UK & Ireland, and top 20 world wide! I was able to play with a member so I was able to get a history lesson and local knowledge throughout our round. It’s as good as advertised maybe even better than expected.
