COUNTRY CLUB OF SCRANTON
🇺🇸 Clarks Summit, PA, USA
Designed by Walter Travis

The Country Club of Scranton, nestled in the rolling hills of Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania, stands as a testament to early 20th-century golf design, subtly shaped by the region's glacial topography. A round here is not about brute force, but rather strategic positioning and a deft touch around the greens. While not nationally prominent, this course possesses a quiet regional appeal, steeped in local history and tradition.
Originally crafted by Walter Travis, a prolific amateur champion turned architect, the layout reflects the strategic intricacies of the era. Later, renowned architect Ron Forse updated and refined the design. Expect undulating fairways, demanding approach shots into well-guarded greens, and a number of doglegs that reward thoughtful course management. The tree-lined fairways require accuracy off the tee, while the closely mown run-off areas surrounding the greens demand creativity with the short game.
The club itself fosters a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere. While championship golf isn't the calling card here, the club has been a staple in the community for over 100 years. Regular tournaments and social events create a warm, inviting community, where new members are easily introduced and quickly adopted into the fold. The clubhouse, offers a panoramic view of the Susquehanna Valley, offers a menu that includes classic American comfort food.
Reviews
The Country Club of Scranton is a must play for Walter Travis lovers. The Green complexes are amazing and will leave you shaking your head. The bunkering is also a standout. Hopefully one day they restore it in some areas that other architects have messed with. Don’t leave without taking a shower…..bring a snorkel !
