Atalaya Golf & Country Club

The Old Course at Atalaya Golf & Country Club sits in the hills above Estepona on Spain's Costa del Sol, designed by Bernard von Limburger and opened in 1968. Von Limburger, a Swiss architect active in southern Spain during the region's golf development boom, routed the course through gently rolling terrain with mature pine and cork oak trees that define playing corridors and frame many holes. The layout reflects the design sensibilities of its era, with generous fairways and relatively straightforward hole concepts that allow the natural topography and vegetation to provide the primary strategic interest. The course occupies land that rises and falls through the coastal hills, offering views toward the Mediterranean and the surrounding Andalusian landscape. The routing takes advantage of elevation changes to create variety in hole character, with some holes playing along ridgelines and others descending into lower valleys. The tree-lined fairways require accuracy from the tee, and the greens are typically elevated and well-bunkered in the style common to European parkland courses of the period. Atalaya operates as a members' club with visitor access, and the Old Course serves as the club's original layout alongside the newer New Course added in 1992. The club maintains a traditional European golf atmosphere, with a clubhouse that reflects the architectural style of southern Spain. The Old Course remains a representative example of early Costa del Sol golf design, predating the more dramatic resort-style courses that would follow in subsequent decades.
