OCEAN at Country Club of Landfall

The Country Club of Landfall's Ocean Course represents an unusual collaboration between Pete Dye and Jack Nicklaus, two architects whose design philosophies rarely intersected in joint projects. Opened in the mid-1980s as part of the Landfall residential community in Wilmington, the course occupies rolling coastal plain terrain characteristic of southeastern North Carolina. The routing moves through mature pines and hardwoods, with several holes playing along or near the Intracoastal Waterway, though the property sits inland from the Atlantic beaches that define the region's resort corridor.

The design reflects elements from both architects: Dye's influence appears in the strategic bunkering and occasional railroad-tie bulkheading, while Nicklaus contributed broader fairway corridors and more generous green complexes than Dye typically favored. The course serves a private membership drawn largely from Landfall's residential community, one of the larger planned developments in the Wilmington area. The layout provides a parkland golf experience distinct from the links-inspired courses found closer to the ocean, with tree-lined fairways and water features that come into play on several holes.

Landfall operates as a country club with traditional amenities including dining facilities and tennis courts. The Ocean Course shares the property with a second eighteen holes, giving members variety in their regular play. Wilmington's temperate climate allows for year-round golf, and the course reflects the region's characteristic Lowcountry landscape without the dramatic elevation changes found in more mountainous parts of the Carolinas.
