Occoneechee Course
Hillsborough, NC, USA

Occoneechee Golf Club sits in Hillsborough, North Carolina, a historic town northwest of Durham in the Piedmont region. The course was designed by J. Marvin Ray, a North Carolina architect who worked primarily in the mid-twentieth century and created several layouts across the state. Ray's designs typically reflect the rolling terrain characteristic of the Piedmont, incorporating natural elevation changes and wooded corridors into routing that suits the regional landscape. The course occupies land that takes its name from the Occoneechee people, a Native American tribe historically significant to this area of North Carolina. Hillsborough itself predates the Revolutionary War and retains considerable colonial-era architecture and character, providing a setting that connects the golf experience to the region's deeper history. The routing likely moves through mature hardwood stands and follows the natural contours of the property, a common feature of courses built in this part of the state during Ray's active period. Occoneechee serves as a community-oriented club in a town known more for its historical preservation than for large-scale development. The course provides golf in a setting that reflects both the landscape traditions of North Carolina design and the quieter, small-town character of Orange County. It remains a local fixture rather than a destination layout, offering a straightforward test of golf shaped by the land's natural movement and the architect's regional sensibility.
This was my home course for a number of years. It’s a good walk, interesting, and a good value. Course was built on an old Tobacco farm back in the 1950s. The same family still owns it. Not truly a muni, but very muni like.
