OAK ISLAND GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Caswell Beach, NC, USA
Designed by George Cobb
Oak Island Golf Club sits on the southern coast of North Carolina near Caswell Beach, occupying land shaped by the maritime environment of the Cape Fear region. George Cobb designed the course in 1962, part of his extensive portfolio of layouts across the Carolinas during the mid-twentieth century. Cobb, who worked primarily in the Southeast, created numerous courses that balanced playability with the natural constraints of coastal and piedmont terrain. The routing at Oak Island reflects his practical approach to design, working with the flat to gently rolling topography typical of barrier island and near-coastal sites.
The course plays through corridors lined with live oaks, pines, and the native vegetation characteristic of North Carolina's lower coastal plain. Water features appear on several holes, a common element in Cobb's work and a natural consequence of the area's hydrology and proximity to tidal waterways. The layout serves as the centerpiece of a residential golf community, a development model that became widespread along the Carolina coast during the latter half of the twentieth century.
Oak Island provides a straightforward test for golfers visiting the Brunswick County area, where the game has long been part of the regional tourism and residential economy. The course operates as a semi-private facility, accommodating both members and daily-fee play. Its location near Southport and within reach of Wilmington places it among the many courses that serve the golf market along this stretch of the Atlantic coast.
Reviews
Just off of Caswell Beach on Oak Island, the golf course enjoys breezes off of the ocean which is needed during the oppressive hot and humid days of summer but gets cooler quicker from October through March. During the Spring the course generally looks bad and the assumption would be that there's a lack of maintenance happening but its because of the Bermuda type grass that the course has which needs the heat/sun. Come mid-May through November the course has fully come in and looks and plays as well as any course in the area. This George Cobb designed course with the 14th as its signature hole is known for its beautiful surroundings and the ever changing winds patterns making it play different every round.
Fun course lots of wildlife🐊 Was expecting a little more of an “ocean” course layout but was pretty. Lot of risk reward tee shot options made for tough decisions
