Notts Golf Club, universally known as Hollinwell, occupies heathland terrain near Kirkby in Ashfield in Nottinghamshire. Willie Park Jr. designed the course in 1901, routing it across rolling, sandy ground covered with heather, gorse, and mature trees—principally silver birch and oak. The property sits on elevated land that provides natural drainage and firm turf conditions characteristic of England's inland heath courses. The layout moves through varied elevation changes, with several holes playing along ridgelines and others descending into wooded valleys.

The course measures over 7,000 yards from the championship tees and features strategic bunkering that rewards precise placement over raw distance. The opening holes establish the heathland character immediately, while the stretch from the 4th through the 7th is particularly noted for dramatic elevation shifts and narrow, tree-lined corridors. The par-three 13th, known as "The Monk's Walk," plays downhill to a green set in a natural amphitheater and ranks among the most photographed holes in English golf. The closing holes return to more open ground with views across the Nottinghamshire countryside.

Hollinwell has hosted numerous significant amateur championships, including multiple English Amateur Championships and the Brabazon Trophy. The club maintains traditional membership values and a relatively low profile despite the course's consistent appearance in national rankings. The clubhouse, a Victorian structure, overlooks the 18th green and reflects the club's long-standing place in English golf.
