NORTHWOOD CLUB
🇺🇸 Dallas, TX, USA
Designed by Bill Diddel, Jay Morrish, Tom Weiskopf
Northwood Club, a Dallas landmark, whispers tales of Texas golf history from its challenging fairways. This classic parkland layout, carved from the rolling terrain of North Dallas, bears the hallmarks of a bygone era, favoring strategic play and a deft touch around the greens. Its generous fairways often belie the subtle undulations and well-guarded putting surfaces that demand thoughtful approaches.
Originally designed by William Diddel, Northwood has seen subsequent refinements by Press Maxwell, and most recently, Tripp Davis. The course’s meticulous conditioning and mature trees create a serene yet demanding golfing experience. The membership historically reflects a blend of established Dallas families and accomplished professionals who appreciate the club's understated elegance and commitment to traditional values.
Northwood notably hosted the 1952 U.S. Open, won by Julius Boros, solidifying its place in major championship lore. The victory, unexpected at the time, added to the course's allure as a place where anything can happen. While not often mentioned in the pantheon of championship venues today, the course has maintained a loyal following and continues to provide a challenging test of golf.
The club is also locally renowned for its Tex-Mex fare, a long-standing tradition that adds to Northwood's unique appeal within the Dallas golf scene.
Reviews
Solid course with a handful of great holes (notably the scenic par 5 14th). Routing crosses Alpha Rd a confusing number of times. Bent greens roll nicely a few months of the year but generally play very soft and slow during the summer. Typically ranks highly among DFW clubs and is probably more driven by the amenities/social angle than the golf course.
Home club. Former US open venue, so it’s challenging, but fair. You can miss in right places and still make par.
Beware of the FASTEST player in all of DFW
