NORTH JERSEY COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Wayne, NJ, USA
Designed by Walter Travis
North Jersey Country Club, carved into the rolling landscape of Wayne, is a testament to enduring traditions of early 20th-century golf. Traversing a classic parkland setting characterized by mature trees and subtly contoured fairways, the course presents a strategic test rather than an overwhelming display of length. Errant shots are penalized by the thick stands of oak and maple that frame each hole.
Originally designed by Walter Travis, a notable figure of the Golden Age of golf architecture, the layout has seen thoughtful enhancements over the years, subtly adapting to the modern game while preserving Travis's original intent. The club's tight knit membership is as much a part of the club's storied lore as the course itself, and it has been rumored that a handshake amongst members is as binding as any written contract.
While not having played host to national championships, North Jersey Country Club maintains a strong regional presence, known for its challenging course conditions and the convivial spirit of its membership. After a round, many players can be found on the patio enjoying the famed steak sandwich.
Reviews
North Jersey is an excellent example of how to make a course difficult in the modern game. Some extremely tough but fair greens are the equalizer to this course playing 6,700 yards from the tips. Really fun and challenging layout.
