NORTH DOWNS GOLF CLUB
🏴 Woldingham, Surrey, England
Designed by Frank Pennink
North Downs Golf Club sits on the chalk ridge of the North Downs escarpment near Woldingham in Surrey, approximately twenty miles south of London. The course was designed by Frank Pennink and opened in 1973, representing one of the architect's later works during a period when he was establishing courses across southern England. Pennink, who also designed or redesigned layouts at clubs including Royal Cinque Ports and Woburn, created a parkland course that takes advantage of the elevated terrain and natural contours of the Surrey countryside.
The layout occupies rolling downland with mature woodland framing many holes. The property's elevation provides views across the surrounding valleys and toward the Weald, though the course itself plays through a mix of open and tree-lined corridors. The design incorporates the natural movement of the land, with several holes playing across slopes and others utilizing the ridge's undulations. The chalk subsoil contributes to good drainage, allowing year-round play that is characteristic of courses built on the North Downs geology.
North Downs functions as a members' club with a traditional structure typical of Surrey golf clubs established in the post-war expansion period. The course serves a local membership and maintains the parkland character that Pennink intended, with tree management and greenkeeping practices preserving the strategic elements of the original design across its par-70 or par-71 routing.
