TORREY PINES GOLF COURSE
🇺🇸 La Jolla, CA, USA
Designed by Tom Weiskopf, William Francis Bell
North at Torrey Pines, carved into the cliffs of La Jolla, offers arguably the most democratic test in championship golf. Originally crafted by William F. Bell in 1957, it's seen notable enhancements from his son, William P. Bell, making it a post-war design shaped by a family legacy. Sweeping Pacific views are the constant companion on this layout, a stark contrast to the less forgiving South Course.
The North Course favors a strategic approach. Shorter than its sibling, the key is accurate iron play and clever course management. While seemingly more forgiving from the tee, the undulating fairways and coastal winds demand respect, often leaving players with challenging lies and unexpected club selections. The poa annua greens, characteristic of the California coast, can be deceptive in their speed and break, demanding a deft touch.
Torrey Pines North has hosted its share of the Farmers Insurance Open, providing a platform for rising stars and established champions alike, but remains accessible to the public. While not considered among the absolute elite courses globally, it's a beloved local treasure, celebrated for its playability and breathtaking scenery. A round here, capped with a fish taco at the nearby clifftop grill, is a quintessential Southern California experience.
Reviews
More fun than the South but not better. I’d opt for the north when in town.
Known for the holes/driving range on the water that you see when you pull in but the inland holes are better IMO. Great track
It isn’t the south course, but it’s still golf on the ocean. That is as much as I can say about it. As a Minnesotan I played here in the winter so my view was skewed as I was just thankful to be playing golf, but this is a glorified muni. It isn’t terrible but I will not be repeating my experience unless it is my only option. The tour should stop worshipping this facility. I do wish my local muni’s had ocean views though.
I’m one who believes the North is superior. No place quite like Torrey Pines. It’s muni and not a resort course, that’s the charm.
Can’t beat it for resident rates
Prefer it to the South
All about the views here.
A bit pricey for what you get as the name is doing some heavy lifting but nonetheless a beautiful course. Had an unforgettable day with one of my best friends out there.
