THE LOS ANGELES COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Los Angeles, CA, USA
Designed by George C. Thomas
North at The Los Angeles Country Club is a celebrated testament to classic golf course design in the heart of Los Angeles' prestigious Wilshire Boulevard corridor. Its heritage is interwoven with the city’s social fabric, a place where Hollywood legends and captains of industry have walked the fairways for generations.
Crafted during the Golden Age of golf architecture, the North Course unfolds across gently rolling terrain and natural barrancas. The original design, a masterwork of Herbert Fowler, challenges golfers with strategic bunkering and subtly contoured greens. Later enhancements by George C. Thomas Jr., and more recently by Gil Hanse, have solidified its place among the nation's most respected layouts. The course rewards thoughtful play, demanding accuracy off the tee more than raw power. The fairways, while generous, often lead to approaches requiring precise distance control into deceptively small targets.
The North Course was the stage for the 2023 U.S. Open, marking a triumphant return of major championship golf to the city. Its membership boasts a diverse and influential group, known as much for their philanthropic endeavors as their love of the game. Legend has it that Walt Disney himself was a frequent player, finding respite and inspiration amidst its manicured landscapes. And, while the competition is fierce, it is rumored that the post-round gin rickeys at the clubhouse are just as compelling as the golf itself.

Love an old gem with the Hanse updates - fave modern architect by far. Open off the tee and scoreable with help from the caddies & playing partners. Such a treat.
Elite championship golf course, a great challenge that tests every part of the game
The North at LACC made for a controversial US Open venue in 2023. I’m of the opinion that George Thomas’s 1927 design is one of the best in the West. The North’s front nine is undoubtedly one of my favorite nines I have played, with an equally as compelling back nine. Every hole is molded around the low lying barranca, which was roughened up as apart of a much needed Gil Hanse restoration in 2010. Thomas forces you to hit so many different types of shots. The variety along with the rich (literally) history here truly makes it feel like a golf historian’s playground.
The club has a mystical quality to it, as you get the sense of how rare everything about it is. It’s fairly incredible to be on the property and forget that you’re in the middle of LA, and that’s due in large part to what an incredible golf course North is. It’s a championship test, but an incredibly fun one at that, and the club’s entire environment is fitting of such a special place.
Pretty special place. Teammate hosted me a while back. It’s a close race but have to give the nod to LACC over Riv. Need to get back to LA…
My first George Thomas course did not disappoint. The bunkering is some of the finest in America. The greens are true with some interesting complexes and shapes. The contour of Downtown LA cannot be understated and can be used as a help or hurt. Fun to play after US Open was held here.
For me, by far the best Los Angeles has to offer. Nothing close.
4 years now since my very first time playing the course and I can still remember every shot I hit that first time, every hole, every putt. Few courses have affected me that way, and every hole at LACC is a masterpiece. The best possible collection of holes on this property, the routing is incredible and the shot making is supremely fun. The sixth hole may be the best short four I’ve ever played.
An escape within a bustling city. When you’re on the property you forget you’re in one of the largest metropolitan cities on the planet. The routing and challenge is excellent. Very playable but it tests you off the tee. A caddie can save you 5-6 strokes because of how much the greens break. I wish I could play this more often and I’m lucky that I’ve been able to get out a few times.
