MAUNA LANI RESORT GOLF
🇺🇸 Kohala Coast, HI, USA
Designed by H. Flint, R. F. Cain, Robin Nelson

Born from the black lava flows of Hawaii's Kohala Coast, the North Course at Mauna Lani is a striking testament to desert golf unlike any other. Carved from the ancient Kaniku lava flow, this open and exposed course, designed by Nelson and Robin Wright in the early 1980s, presents a stark, visual contrast: emerald fairways winding through an ebony landscape. Wide fairways belie the challenge here. Savvy players must strategically navigate natural hazards, strategically placed lava rock, and the ever-present coastal winds that can quickly turn a promising round upside down.
While it has never hosted a major championship, the North Course has been a favorite stop for senior professionals and amateur competitions alike. Its defining hole is undoubtedly the par-3 17th, a demanding shot played directly over a natural lava amphitheater and backdropped by the Pacific. The green is nestled right against the ocean— a fitting climax to a round defined by its unique environment.
The North Course distinguishes itself from its sibling, the South Course, with its rugged character and emphasis on playability for golfers of all levels. While not necessarily known for demanding length, it rewards tactical decision-making and an appreciation for the land’s natural contours. After your round, make sure to stop into the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel, where you are welcomed with cold scented towels and tropical juice.
Reviews
Compared to the South, Mauna Lani North feels a little wilder and more rugged. Carved through ancient lava fields and framed by kiawe trees, it has a character all its own. The fairways wind through black rock corridors, giving it a stark, dramatic beauty you don’t often see in resort golf. It’s still very playable - wide enough off the tee and not overly punishing - but it demands a bit more precision than the South. The contrast between emerald fairways and jet-black lava is striking, and when the ocean does make an appearance, it’s all the more memorable. While it may not have the same professional pedigree as the South (which hosted the Senior Skins Game for a decade), the North is beloved by many who play it - some even prefer it for its raw, untamed feel. If you’re on the Big Island, the best move is simple: play them both.
