CANOE BROOK COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Summit, NJ, USA
Designed by Alfred H. Tull, Walter Travis
Canoe Brook's North Course, a tapestry woven into the rolling landscape of Short Hills, New Jersey, is a testament to a club deeply rooted in tradition, where the echoes of putts holed by generations of discerning members linger in the air. Carved from classic parkland terrain, the North presents a strategic test, rewarding thoughtful approaches and well-placed drives more than brute power. Its generous fairways give the illusion of forgiveness, but subtle doglegs and cleverly positioned bunkers, coupled with undulating greens, can quickly punish errant shots, demanding a deft touch and careful course management.
Originally designed in the early 20th century, the course bears the indelible mark of its architect, a master of the Golden Age. Subsequent renovations have honored the original vision while subtly enhancing the challenge for the modern game. While Canoe Brook has traditionally remained outside the national spotlight, its prestigious membership and commitment to preserving the integrity of the game have made it a beloved haven for serious golfers in the New York metropolitan area.
The clubhouse, a stately manor overlooking the course, is not merely a building, but a repository of shared experiences and understated elegance. Stories abound of titans of industry and local legends settling scores on the 18th green, their rivalries as intense as the competition itself.
Reviews
Played in the fall and the course was in absolutely perfect shape, save for the bunkers. Greens were rock hard and rolling perfectly. Tee boxes and fairways were pristine. Course is really difficult. Would’ve loved to have seen it before RTJ/Rees Jones got their hands on the place and re-routed it…
Canoe Brook North is an excellent test to the modern golfer. While the Par 4’s range of length isn’t huge, there is still a good mix of wedges, short irons, and mid irons. When the greens are firm and fast, it is one of the best championship tests in NJ.
Playing the north from the tips is uniquely challenging. Same thing with the south, at sunset around this time of year the place shines.
