The North Course at Bayou Oaks at City Park occupies land within New Orleans City Park, one of the largest urban parks in the United States. The facility's history traces back to the early twentieth century when City Park first established golf on the property. The current North Course layout reflects a comprehensive redesign by Rees Jones, completed in the years following Hurricane Katrina, which devastated the park and its golf infrastructure in 2005. Greg Muirhead also contributed to the design work during the restoration and rebuilding effort. The course plays through the flat, low-lying terrain characteristic of New Orleans, with water management integral to both the design and playability. Lagoons, drainage canals, and wetland areas appear throughout the routing, reflecting the natural hydrology of the region. Live oaks and other native vegetation frame many holes, providing definition in an otherwise horizontal landscape. The design incorporates modern course architecture principles while respecting the constraints and opportunities presented by the site's elevation and water table. As a municipal facility operated by City Park, the North Course serves a broad public constituency in the New Orleans area.
