NIRWANA BALI GOLF RESORT
🇮🇩 Tabanan, Bali, ID
Designed by Greg Norman
Nirwana Bali occupies a dramatic clifftop site along Bali's southwestern coast in the Tabanan regency, where the Indian Ocean meets terraced rice paddies and volcanic landscapes. Greg Norman designed the course in the late 1990s as part of the Pan Pacific Nirwana Bali Resort development, routing holes through terrain that drops from elevated plateaus to the sea. The property incorporates views of the sixteenth-century Tanah Lot temple, one of Bali's most photographed landmarks, which sits on a rock formation offshore and becomes a visual focal point from several holes.
The layout moves through distinct landscape zones. Inland holes play across and alongside traditional rice terraces that remain in agricultural use, while the closing stretch turns toward the ocean. The signature sequence includes holes that run along and above the coastline, where fairways are carved into cliffsides with the surf visible below. Norman's design takes advantage of the elevation changes and the tropical setting, with palm groves, lava rock outcroppings, and prevailing winds off the water influencing play.
The course serves resort guests and visiting golfers drawn to the combination of challenging golf and Balinese scenery. The property integrates local architectural elements and maintains the cultural landscape, with the rice paddies and temple views reinforcing the sense of place. Conditioning reflects the tropical climate, and the routing's variety—from elevated tee shots over ravines to approach shots framed by ocean backdrops—makes Nirwana Bali one of Southeast Asia's more visually distinctive golf experiences.
