THE CLUB AT PRONGHORN
🇺🇸 Bend, OR, USA
Designed by Jack Nicklaus
The Club at Pronghorn's Nicklaus Course sits in the high desert of central Oregon just north of Bend, where the landscape is defined by juniper, sagebrush, and volcanic rock formations. Jack Nicklaus designed this course as part of a residential development that opened in the early 2000s, routing holes across gently rolling terrain with views of the Cascade Range to the west. The setting is characteristic of Oregon's eastern plateau, where elevation approaches 3,800 feet and the climate is dry and sunny compared to the state's western valleys.
The design incorporates the natural desert features into play, with native grasses framing fairways and lava rock outcroppings appearing throughout the property. Nicklaus shaped generous landing areas but protected greens with strategic bunkering and contours that reward accurate approach shots. Water comes into play on several holes, a notable feature given the arid surroundings. The course stretches over 7,000 yards from the back tees and offers multiple tee boxes to accommodate different skill levels.
Pronghorn operates as a private club with resort access, drawing members and guests who appreciate the high desert environment and the opportunity to play a Nicklaus design in central Oregon. The facility includes a second course designed by Tom Fazio, giving the property two distinct championship layouts. The Nicklaus Course represents the architect's approach to working with dramatic natural terrain while maintaining playability across a range of abilities.
Reviews
The other course. I’m not the biggest Nicklaus design fan but this course slaps. Pronghorn does an amazing job conditioning their courses and this one is tough as nails through the high desert. It isn’t as beautiful and fun as its private Fazio counterpart but I will still knock your socks off.
