NEWPORT COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Newport, RI, USA
Designed by William Davis
Newport Country Club is where American championship golf first took root, hosting the inaugural U.S. Amateur and U.S. Open in 1895. Located in the historic heart of Newport, Rhode Island, the course presents a compelling blend of seaside challenge and early American golf architecture. It favors a precise, strategic game where wind dictates club selection as much as distance. Errant tee shots are often penalized with unforgiving lies and the need for skillful recovery shots.
Originally designed by William Davis, Newport has undergone subtle refinements over the years, respecting its heritage while adapting to the modern game. The terrain is characterized by undulating fairways that flow naturally alongside coastal grasses and breezes – a nod to its links-style inspiration. While not a fixture on the professional tour circuit in recent decades, Newport remains a significant venue for top-tier amateur competitions.
Beyond the course, Newport Country Club represents a bastion of classic American sporting society. Tradition dictates collared shirts and quiet reverence, adding to the feeling of being transported to a different era. Known for its unwavering commitment to the traditions of the game, the club still rings with a specific brand of American exceptionalism from a different era.
Reviews
Have played it a few times. The historical relevance is the draw in my mind. The holes across the street can feel a little back and forth. The 4th hole is a par 3 along Ocean Avenue. My buddy hit driver and I hit a hybrid and we were both short. The wind was whipping. Fun time.
Played all 3 times in mid-spring in New England. Windy, cold, and dry. Nevertheless an amazing experience
