NEW JERSEY NATIONAL GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Basking Ridge, NJ, USA
Designed by Roy Case
New Jersey National Golf Club sits in Basking Ridge in the Somerset Hills region of northern New Jersey, an area known for its rolling terrain and established golf tradition. The course was designed by Roy Case, a respected architect who worked extensively in the Northeast during the mid-to-late twentieth century. Case's work typically emphasized strategic routing that took advantage of natural landforms, and New Jersey National reflects this approach with holes that move across varied elevations and through wooded corridors characteristic of the region.
The layout occupies property that features the kind of topographical movement common to this part of New Jersey—moderate hills, mature tree cover, and natural drainage patterns that influence hole design and shot values. Case routed the course to incorporate these features, creating a mix of uphill, downhill, and sidehill lies that require thoughtful club selection and course management. The design balances risk-reward opportunities with more straightforward holes, a hallmark of Case's philosophy that golf should test players without resorting to artificial difficulty.
New Jersey National operates as a private club serving members from the surrounding communities. The facility reflects the traditional country club model common in this part of the state, where golf is complemented by social and dining amenities. The course provides a solid test for accomplished players while remaining accessible to members of varying skill levels, consistent with Case's reputation for creating layouts that accommodate a broad membership base.
Reviews
Facility is pretty nice but the course just does not do it for me. Has a modern feel but no real theme or soul to the layout. Conditions are average and the green complexes are uninteresting.
