NEW FOREST GOLF CLUB
🇮🇪 Tyrrellspass, Westmeath, IE
Designed by Peter McEvoy

New Forest Golf Club sits in the Irish Midlands near Tyrrellspass, County Westmeath, approximately an hour's drive west of Dublin. Designed by Peter McEvoy, the English amateur champion and Walker Cup stalwart who turned to course architecture in the 1990s, the layout occupies gently rolling parkland characteristic of this central region of Ireland. McEvoy's design work emphasizes strategic variety and playability across different skill levels, and New Forest reflects this approach with a routing that incorporates natural contours and mature tree lines.
The course plays through a mix of open and wooded terrain, with several holes framed by established woodland that gives the property its name. Water features appear on a number of holes, adding both visual interest and strategic consideration to club selection and approach angles. The parkland setting provides a relatively sheltered playing environment compared to Ireland's more exposed links courses, though wind can still influence play across the more open stretches of the property.
New Forest serves primarily as a members' club with a welcoming visitor policy common to many Irish parkland courses. The facility includes practice areas and a clubhouse that supports both competitive club events and casual rounds. The course represents a solid example of modern Irish parkland design, offering a straightforward test of golf in a pleasant rural setting without the historical pedigree or championship credentials of Ireland's more prominent venues.
Reviews
Difficulty is a bit of a subjective thing but play this place off the tips and it’s tough. Overall I like the course but there’s a few holes that irritate. The 4th is annoying because you can hit a decent drive down the middle of the fairway and have no 2nd shot because the tree on the corner blocks everything out. Similar on the 12th, a tree smack bang in the middle of the hole where you hit a good drive and are blocked out. The green on the 16th is too severely sloped for the length of hole, if they moved the tee back it would be a really good short par 4.
