NEW CASTLE COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 New Castle, PA, USA
Designed by A .W. Tillinghast

New Castle Country Club occupies rolling terrain in western Pennsylvania, approximately an hour north of Pittsburgh. A. W. Tillinghast designed the course in the 1920s during his most prolific period, when he was creating layouts throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. The property features the natural contours and mature tree cover typical of the region, with elevation changes that provide both strategic interest and variety in shot requirements.
Tillinghast's design philosophy emphasized strategic options and natural movement in the land, principles evident in the routing at New Castle. The course presents a mix of hole lengths and angles, with greens that incorporate subtle internal contours and approach angles that reward thoughtful play. Bunker placement follows Tillinghast's characteristic style of framing landing areas and greenside complexes to create visual definition while allowing multiple routes of play for golfers of different abilities.
The club has served the New Castle community for nearly a century, maintaining its role as a traditional private club in a smaller Pennsylvania city. The layout has undergone periodic updates over the decades, as most courses of this era have, though the fundamental routing and design character remain rooted in Tillinghast's original work. The course provides a representative example of Golden Age architecture adapted to the rolling Pennsylvania landscape, offering members a layout that balances challenge with playability across its varied terrain.
