SUNNINGDALE GOLF CLUB
🏴 Sunningdale, Berkshire, England
Designed by Harry S. Colt, J.S.F. Morrison

Sunningdale Golf Club, the embodiment of heathland golf in Ascot, sets the benchmark for inland links-style play, a distinction that resonates through its two revered courses, the Old and the New. The Old, opened in 1901, is generally considered the superior course, which favors strategic play over sheer power. The course demands careful consideration on every shot. The New, designed by Harry Colt and opened in 1923, presents a sterner test from the tee, built across bolder, more dramatic terrain.
Characterized by heather-clad terrain, punctuated by gorse and mature pines, both courses demand accuracy off the tee. Sunningdale favors the thoughtful golfer who can navigate its subtly undulating fairways and protect par on its notoriously slick greens. The natural contours of the land dictate the flow of each hole, providing a diverse and engaging experience.
While Sunningdale hasn't hosted major championships, it remains a favored venue for prestigious amateur events. The club's membership, a blend of accomplished golfers and discerning individuals, fosters an atmosphere of camaraderie and respect for the game. Stories abound regarding the club’s celebrated members, from royalty to titans of industry. An open secret is that a round at Sunningdale is as much a social affair as a golfing one, often accompanied by post-round drinks and lively debate in the clubhouse. And a final aside, it is often said by those who have travelled far and wide on the links is "There's no better heathland in the world" when referring to Sunningdale Golf Club.
Reviews
Flip a coin I don’t care which golf course I play at sunningdale if I’m only doing 18. Actually that’s not true, I’ll play the two ball course on the day so we have it to ourselves and it leaves more time for drinking on the terrace.
