MULLET BAY RESORT AND CASINO
Maho Reef, Sint Maarten, Saint-Martin/Sint Maarten
Designed by Joe Lee
Mullet Bay occupies a coastal stretch on the Dutch side of Sint Maarten, designed by Joe Lee and opened in the 1970s as part of the Mullet Bay Resort and Casino development. Lee, a prolific Florida-based architect who worked extensively in the Caribbean during this era, routed the course along the island's northwestern shoreline near Maho Bay and Simpson Bay Lagoon. The layout takes advantage of the tropical setting and ocean views, with holes playing through relatively flat to gently rolling terrain characteristic of the island's lower elevations.
The course experienced significant damage from Hurricane Luis in 1995, which devastated much of the resort infrastructure. While portions of the property have seen various stages of recovery and redevelopment over the years, the golf course's operational status has fluctuated considerably in the decades since. The original routing incorporated typical Lee design elements—generous fairways, strategic bunkering, and greens that reward accurate approach play—adapted to the Caribbean environment with its trade winds and salt-tolerant grasses.
Mullet Bay sits near Princess Juliana International Airport, where the famous low-flying aircraft approach has become a tourist attraction at nearby Maho Beach. The course's history reflects both the ambitious resort development that characterized Sint Maarten's growth in the 1970s and 1980s and the vulnerability of Caribbean golf infrastructure to major hurricanes. For golfers visiting the island, the site represents an important chapter in the region's golf development, though conditions and accessibility depend on ongoing restoration efforts.
