MOUNTRATH GOLF CLUB
🇮🇪 Mountrath, Laois, IE
Designed by Peter McEvoy

Mountrath Golf Club sits in the town of Mountrath in County Laois, in Ireland's midlands. The course was designed by Peter McEvoy, the distinguished English amateur golfer who won the British Amateur Championship twice and represented Great Britain & Ireland in multiple Walker Cup matches before turning to course design. McEvoy's work here reflects his understanding of strategic golf developed through competitive play at the highest amateur level.
The layout occupies gently rolling parkland typical of the Irish midlands, with mature trees lining many fairways and defining the playing corridors. The terrain provides natural movement without severe elevation changes, allowing for a walking-friendly round that still presents varied stances and shot requirements. Water features come into play on several holes, and the bunkering emphasizes positional play off the tee and demands precision on approaches to greens that feature subtle contours.
Mountrath serves as an accessible club for the local community and visitors exploring golf in County Laois, a region less traveled than Ireland's coastal counties but home to several established parkland courses. The club maintains traditional Irish golf club hospitality, with a welcoming atmosphere for members and guests. The course offers a straightforward test of golf that rewards accuracy and course management rather than relying solely on length, consistent with McEvoy's design philosophy shaped by decades of competitive amateur golf.
Reviews
Pleasantly surprised by this place. Knew nothing of it and played in the Irish winter but it’s a nice layout. Would like to play in Summer when conditions are better.
