SUPERIOR NATIONAL GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Lutsen, MN, USA
Designed by Joel Goldstrand

Superior National Golf Club's Mountain Course occupies dramatic terrain along the North Shore of Lake Superior near Lutsen, Minnesota. Designed by Joel Goldstrand and opened in the late 1990s, the course takes full advantage of its elevated setting, with several holes offering expansive views across the lake and the surrounding boreal forest. The property's significant elevation changes and rocky outcroppings reflect the rugged character of Minnesota's Arrowhead region.
The routing moves through dense stands of birch, aspen, and pine, with fairways carved from the natural landscape. Goldstrand's design incorporates the site's topography rather than fighting it, creating holes that rise and fall with the ridgeline. The course features a mix of risk-reward opportunities and strategic options shaped by the terrain, with approach shots often playing to greens set against backdrops of forest or open sky. Several holes play along or across ravines, adding both visual drama and tactical consideration.
The Mountain Course serves as one of two eighteen-hole layouts at Superior National, the other being the Canyon Course. Together they form a northern Minnesota golf destination that attracts visitors to the North Shore during the region's relatively short playing season. The facility operates as a public-access course, drawing golfers who combine their rounds with the area's outdoor recreation opportunities and scenic byway tourism along Lake Superior's western shoreline.
