MOUNT SHASTA RESORT
🇺🇸 Mount Shasta, CA, USA
Designed by Jim Sommers, Sandy Tatum

Mount Shasta Resort sits at approximately 3,500 feet elevation in the shadow of its namesake peak, a 14,179-foot stratovolcano that dominates the landscape of far northern California. The course was designed by Sandy Tatum and Jim Sommers and opened in the late 1980s as part of a resort development intended to draw golfers to this remote corner of the state, roughly an hour's drive north of Redding and well removed from the major population centers of the Bay Area or Sacramento.
The routing takes advantage of the mountain setting, with holes playing through stands of pine and fir and offering views of Mount Shasta when the weather cooperates. The terrain features moderate elevation changes characteristic of the region's volcanic geology, and the design incorporates natural features of the forested landscape. Water comes into play on several holes, and the course layout reflects the collaborative approach of Tatum, a prominent figure in Northern California golf administration and course design, and Sommers, who worked on various projects in the western United States.
The resort operates as a public facility, serving both destination visitors and local golfers from the small communities scattered across Siskiyou County. The course provides one of the few regulation eighteen-hole options in this sparsely populated region, where the golf season is shaped by mountain weather patterns and winter snowfall at elevation.
