MOODY GARDENS GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Galveston, TX, USA
Designed by Carlton Gipson, Jacobsen Hardy, Peter Jacobsen

Moody Gardens Golf Club occupies a flat, coastal site on Galveston Island, where the design team of Jacobsen Hardy—led by PGA Tour player Peter Jacobsen and architect Jim Hardy—collaborated with Carlton Gipson to create a course that addresses the challenges of the Texas Gulf Coast terrain. The layout opened in the late 1990s as part of the broader Moody Gardens resort complex, which includes convention facilities, attractions, and a hotel. The course was built on reclaimed land with minimal natural elevation, requiring the designers to manufacture contour and strategic interest through earthwork, water features, and bunkering.
The routing incorporates numerous lakes and wetland areas that serve both drainage and strategic purposes, with water coming into play on more than half the holes. Prevailing Gulf winds add variability to club selection and shot shaping throughout the round. The design emphasizes width off the tee in many places, but approach shots demand precision given the water hazards and the modest size of several greens. Native grasses and palms frame many holes, reinforcing the subtropical coastal setting.
Moody Gardens serves both resort guests and local membership, functioning as a tournament venue for regional amateur events and corporate outings. The course benefits from its proximity to Galveston's beaches and the broader amenities of the Moody Gardens complex, making it a destination for groups combining golf with leisure activities. The flat landscape and open character allow for walkability despite the humid climate common to the region.
