MONTGOMERY GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Montgomery, MN, USA
Designed by Joel Goldstrand

Montgomery Golf Club occupies rolling farmland in south-central Minnesota, roughly an hour southwest of the Twin Cities. Designed by Joel Goldstrand and opened in the mid-1990s, the course reflects the architect's regional approach to public and semi-private golf in the Upper Midwest. Goldstrand, a Minnesota-based designer, built several courses across the state during this period, typically working with agricultural terrain and incorporating natural drainage corridors and modest elevation changes into layouts that balance playability with strategic interest.
The routing at Montgomery moves through open prairie and wooded sections, with fairways that follow the natural contours of the land. Water features appear on several holes, often positioned to challenge approach shots or frame greens. The design emphasizes wide playing corridors off the tee, allowing golfers of varying skill levels to find the fairway, while green complexes introduce more nuanced decisions around short game execution. Bunkering is straightforward, placed to define landing areas and protect putting surfaces without excessive penal character.
The club serves the local community and visitors exploring golf in the Minnesota River Valley region. The setting offers views of surrounding farmland and wooded areas typical of Le Sueur County, with a quiet, rural atmosphere that contrasts with busier metro courses. Montgomery represents the kind of accessible, well-maintained daily-fee facility that anchors small-town golf culture in Minnesota, providing a solid test without pretense.
Reviews
Played on a rainy day earlyish in the season, greens need some work (lotta pitch marks) and fairways are pretty bouncy (for riding in a cart). Layout is a lil strange but it’s a good, score able golf course. Would recommend getting out and trying sometime.
