Montanyà at Club de golf Montanya

Club de Golf Montanyà sits in the Montseny Natural Park near El Brull, about an hour north of Barcelona in Catalonia. Designed by Dave Thomas and opened in the early 1990s, the course occupies rolling, forested terrain at roughly 800 meters elevation in the pre-Pyrenean foothills. The setting combines dense Mediterranean woodland with open meadow areas, and the routing takes advantage of significant elevation changes throughout the property.

Thomas, a prolific European architect who competed on the European Tour before turning to design, created a layout that emphasizes strategic positioning over length. The course measures around 6,000 meters from the back tees and features relatively narrow fairways carved through oak and pine forest. Accuracy off the tee matters more than distance, as many holes require careful navigation around trees and through corridors. Several holes play across or along valleys, and the elevation shifts create both uphill and downhill approaches that demand thoughtful club selection.

The natural landscape provides much of the course's character. Views extend across the Montseny massif, and the cooler mountain climate distinguishes the experience from coastal Catalan courses. The club operates as a members' facility but welcomes visitors, and the clubhouse reflects the regional architecture of the area. Montanyà serves primarily local and Barcelona-area golfers seeking a mountain course alternative to the more heavily trafficked layouts closer to the city.
