PENHA LONGA GOLF CLUB
🇵🇹 Sintra, Lisboa e Setúbal, PT
Designed by Kyle Phillips
The Monastery Course at Penha Longa Golf Club occupies a dramatic hillside site in the Sintra mountains, approximately 30 kilometers northwest of Lisbon. Designed by Kyle Phillips and opened in the mid-1990s, the course winds through a landscape of cork and pine forests, with significant elevation changes that define its character. The property includes a historic monastery dating to the 14th century, now part of a resort complex, which gives the course its name and provides an architectural focal point visible from several holes.
Phillips routed the course to take advantage of the natural topography, with holes that climb and descend through the wooded terrain. The design incorporates strategic bunkering and water features, with several holes offering views across the valley toward the Atlantic Ocean and the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. The layout requires thoughtful club selection and course management, as the elevation changes affect distance and the tree-lined corridors demand accuracy. The course has hosted professional events on the European Tour, including multiple editions of the Portuguese Open.
The setting in Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its palaces and romantic architecture, adds cultural context to the golf experience. The climate benefits from Atlantic influences, with moderate temperatures year-round, though wind can be a factor given the exposed hillside positions of several holes. The Monastery Course represents Phillips's approach to working with dramatic natural sites, emphasizing strategic variety over length.
